E-learning Communities
Recently I have been using a social media outlet called Reddit, Reddit amazes me with how much community it builds and how it creates an open forum for people to not only share information but to truly connect with one another on many different levels. Information is shared and concerns are answered by thousands of people within the online community. I am fascinated by how much work individuals put into Reddit as some will spend hours a week upholding topics within subreddits to ensure a healthy and friendly community. Reddit has the potential to become a catalyst for individuals to come together and collaborate on many different projects. I use for example a community I am a part of. As a video gamer finding information and staying connected is top priority when wanting to get the edge in any video game. Most of the time this is accomplished by gaining information from other players, Reddit has become one of the many sources where players come together and share their information. However, Reddit has not only become a place to gain information for players but also a place where people can come share their own personal stories and connect with one another on a deeper level. Recently over this past summer a gaming community I am a part of called Guild Wars 2 was able to come together over the internet to do something more than just play the game. Hundreds of players came together and organized what they called a “toga party” where they would simply come together in the game and play with each other. However, the “toga party” was more than just about playing a game but rather about spreading awareness for Multiple Scelrosis. By using social media outlets such as Reddit they were able to raise thousands of dollars through donations from both individuals within and out of the community. This just proves to me that social media as the potential to do more than just connect people and can push individuals towards meaningful actions.
