Reading Response- Chapter 7
For this week’s chapter of Lankshear & Nobel, I found myself most relating to a video from John Seeley Brown. In his video, New Ways of Learning in a Rapidly Changing World he discusses the importance of embracing change. John Seeley brown discusses how students want to learn and want to be measured. From our chapter, social learning changes what students learn to how students learn. John discusses how students are self-driven in their interest and constantly seek out new ways to improve themselves. What I find interesting from his video is his mention of how individuals access information in an instant to learn from others online. I think it is important to understand that education and learning has changed with the development of technology. Students no longer have to attend class to learn as they can learn from their mobile devices. As a gamer, I take my interest in social learning from how games teach others to learn. As mentioned in the video, players often come together in a form of a guild or party to play and learn from one another. From collaboration players take the information that is learned and create their own meaning from it. The information is transformed to make meaning that the individual can understand in their own way. With the development of technology, I think the question is how important is it for students to memorize certain information? With access to different resources student now have many different options in how they want to learn. An important note I wanted to mention from the video is how John mentions there will always be a group out there with the same interest as you but the hardest thing may be how we join these groups. From our reading, I think it would be important to recognize student interest and promote strategy in how students can get involved and utilize the tools around them in their learning. Instead of pushing information to be memorized, take a look at the video and let me know what you all think!
